What is Bismuth and Talc?

Bismuth Oxychloride is a naturally occurring very heavy element found in nickel, tin and silver that’s primarily used to manufacture metal by-products. It may surprise you that the chemical makeup of bismuth closely resembles arsenic. Most of the bismuth produced in the USA is as a by-product of refining lead, tin, copper, silver and gold ores. Bismuth by itself is not safe to use in cosmetics and must be refined and combined with other elements (oxygen and chlorine) to create Bismuth Oxychloride. Talc is a mineral composed of hydrated magnesium silicate; it is a natural ingredient but it is linked to lung, ovarian, and testicular cancers and it also has traces of asbestos, a known carcinogen.

Why do some companies use fillers such as Bismuth & Talc in Mineral Makeup?

Many cosmetic companies use BOC because it hides flaws, adds a radiant glow to the face and is a dirt-cheap filler. Its binding qualities cause the make-up to “stick” to your skin for a short time. Fillers in general allow companies to reduce the quantity of expensive ingredients in their products, increasing profits at the consumer’s expense.

What are some of the effects of these fillers?

So what are some of the side effects of these fillers? Studies have shown that topical application of Bismuth Oxychloride triggers reactions such as pustules, welts, swelling, extreme itchiness, redness and rashes in 75% of women. Inhaling BOC powder, which can happen while applying dry cosmetics such as powders, causes respiratory irritation which can affect your nose, throat and lungs. Talc is associated with an increased risk for many cancers, which is the reason baby powder manufacturers have turned away from it.

The potential dangers of these fillers are far too serious to be ignored.

What are Parabens & Phthalates?

Parabens are some of the most commonly used preservatives in cosmetics and skincare because they slow the growth of microbes and bacteria in products. Phthalates are a group of chemicals used in hundreds of products, such as cosmetics, as solubilizers, plasticizers, or denaturants, used in things such as toys, vinyl flooring and wall covering, detergents, lubricating oils, food packaging, pharmaceuticals, blood bags and tubing, and personal care products.

Why do some companies use Parabens & Phthalates in Mascara and Skincare?

They are readily available, maintain consistency in texture, and delay spoilage, thus providing the company with a cost-effective way to lengthen their product’s shelf life. Unfortunately their gain comes at the expense of the consumer, who may be accumulating unsafe levels of these additives in his or her own body systems from frequent exposure to multiple products. Ingredients ending with the suffix -paraben are numerous and commonplace on product labels. The FDA allows terms such as “fragrance” and “parfum” to include phthalates, which do not have to be explicitly listed.

What are some of the effects of Parabens & Phthalates?

While the U.S. FDA and the World Health Organization consider these chemicals safe at low levels, many fear prolonged use may cause unsafe levels to build up in the systems of the consumer. The harmful effects associated with Parabens and Phthalates include endocrine disruption, developmental and reproductive toxicity, allergies, and immunotoxicity. Parabens have been deemed xenoestrogens, agents that mimic estrogen in the body. This leads to an increase in the expression of genes usually regulated by estradiol (a natural form of estrogen); these genes cause human breast cancer cells to grow and multiply in cellular studies. Phthalates can interfere with reproductive functioning by reducing the levels of sex hormones, potentially causing issues in the development and functioning of both male and female sex organs.

Why Sweet Minerals does not use Parabens and Phthalates…

All of us here at Sweet Minerals strive to bring our users the best quality products possible with no potentially dangerous additives–not even commonly used industrial ingredients at low enough levels to be considered “safe”. We have always chosen not to use ANY harsh chemicals, fillers, irritants, synthetic perfumes, parabens, or phthalates because we care for the safety and health of our loved ones and the consumers who use our products.
